We’d like to invite everyone to the Australian Academy of Science Fenner Conference on the Environment: Exceptional times, exceptional plants.
What’s happening?
This one day workshop provides an opportunity for scientists and organisations to better understand which Australasian plant species need alternatives to seed banking and what ex situ conservation options are available (including living collections, cryopreservation and tissue culture). These methods for conserving plant germplasm can help facilitate species recovery and protect species from extinction. The conference will include presentations and a panel session, provide an opportunity to strengthen partnerships and the chance to interact with experts online.
The Fenner Conference is an ideal introduction to key chapters of the new third edition of ‘Plant Germplasm Conservation in Australia – strategies and guidelines for developing, managing and utilising ex situ collections’ (also known as the Germplasm Guidelines), which will be launched earlier in the week. Significant advances to identify and conserve ‘exceptional plants’ ex situ have been made since the guidelines were last published. Knowledge-sharing will support plant conservation in this critical time. Sharing our knowledge can help prevent plant extinctions by better understanding species biology as well as providing plants and knowledge to support translocation and ecological restoration.

After the conference
We will also be holding a writing day, by invitation, to summarise outcomes and recommendations for exceptional species conservation in Australia and New Zealand and conclude the Australian Academy of Science Fenner Conference on the Environment in 2022, more details to come.

Orchid Conservation Symposium
The ANPC will be working with project partners to organise an orchid conservation symposium in 2021. This symposium to be held over two days will provide an online forum to increase awareness of the ecology and conservation of orchids amongst practitioners. It will also provide an opportunity to share the project’s results and promote networking among the orchid conservation community. The symposium is scheduled for 22 and 23 June 2021.

The Annual General Meeting of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation Inc. (ANPC) will be held on Wednesday 11 November 2020, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm (Australian Eastern Daylight-Saving Time) via Zoom, due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting on-site options at the Australian National Botanical Gardens. The Agenda and meeting papers will be circulated to all members closer to the date. All financial members are encouraged to attend in a voting capacity to ensure we reach a quorum, and to hear about what the ANPC has achieved over the last year. This includes individual members and representatives of organisational members. Please RSVP to the Secretary, Melissa Millar, by Wednesday 4 November 2020 to assist us in preparing a successful AGM and register for the event. You will then be sent the Zoom conference details.

The ANPC is pleased to announce that the 13th Australasian Plant Conservation Conference (APCC13) will be held in Albury from 19-23 April 2021 and hosted by Albury City Council. Whether you’re involved in planting 20 trees in a fragmented urban remnant or 2 million for a biodiversity offset, having access to a sufficient quantity of high-quality seed, from a broad range of species, is essential for restoring ecosystems that are healthy and resilient over the long-term. Given development pressures, climate change and declining space for connectivity across the Greater Sydney Basin and beyond, there is an increasing need for restorationists, plant producers and landscape architects to collaborate on ensuring natives of the correct provenance and genetics are conserved as well as planted within urban spaces. This event is being co-hosted by the ANPC and the Australian Association for Bush Regenerators (AABR) at the Teachers Federation Conference Centre, Reservoir Street, Sydney and is assisted by the NSW Government through its Environmental Trust.
