Saving the brilliant sun orchid (Thelymitra mackibbinii) from extinction

The ANPC is working with Royal Botanic Gardens VictoriaFriends of Grampians Gariwerd – FOGGS and Australasian Native Orchid Society – Victorian Group to save the threatened Thelymitra mackibbinii from extinction, thanks to funding from the Department of Environment, Land, Water and PlanningThelymitra mackibbinii has less than 60 naturally wild plants remaining in the Wimmera district of Victoria. So far, two exclusion fences have been constructed to protect plants from grazing kangaroos, wallabies and rabbits. Surveys for any new plants and to identify the species’ pollinator (a native bee) have also been undertaken by community volunteers. Further surveys and pollinator baiting will be undertaken this Spring, before re-introducing 400 seedlings in winter 2021. Read more.

The deadline to submit articles for the APC summer issue is fast approaching. There is no specific theme for with articles on any plant conservation topic welcome. The APC editor is encouraging submission of articles describing plant and ecological community responses to fire. ANPC Annual General Meeting – Wednesday 11 November 2020, 1-2pm (AEDT)

The Annual General Meeting of the Australian Network for Plant Conservation Inc. (ANPC) will be held on Wednesday 11 November 2020, from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm (Australian Eastern Daylight-Saving Time) via Zoom, due to COVID-19 restrictions limiting on-site options at the Australian National Botanical Gardens. The Agenda and meeting papers will be circulated to all members closer to the date. All financial members are encouraged to attend in a voting capacity to ensure we reach a quorum, and to hear about what the ANPC has achieved over the last year. This includes individual members and representatives of organisational members. Please RSVP to the Secretary, Melissa Millar, by Wednesday 4 November 2020 to assist us in preparing a successful AGM and register for the event. You will then be sent the Zoom conference details.

Nominations are now open for the following positions on the ANPC Inc. Committee of Management:
• Secretary
• Treasurer
• Ordinary members (5 positions)

Nominees for the above positions must complete the ANPC_Committee_Nomination_Form_2020. Nominations must specify the position being sought. For clarification of the duties of the positions, or of the membership status of nominees or nominators, please contact the Secretary well before the deadline. Nominations must be received by the Secretary at least seven days before the AGM, i.e. by close of business on Wednesday 4 November 2020. Nominations may be emailed to the Secretary, or mailed to The Secretary, ANPC Inc., GPO Box 1777 Canberra ACT 2601. Nominees need to be nominated and seconded by two (2) members of the Network and these can be submitted separately if required.

FloraBank Guidelines Update

FloraBank Guidelines Update

The FloraBank Guidelines, for best practice native seed collection and use, are getting a long-awaited update. The update is part of the Healthy Seeds project, which is being funded by NSW Government, through its Environmental Trust. The project commenced late 2019, and so far, 12 of the 15 modules have been drafted by a diverse range of experts. These modules are currently being reviewed by people across the world.
